In this interview Alberto Di Lorenzo speaks about his experiences in moving between Ethiopia, Eritrea and Italy. He was born in 1954 and attended the Scuole italiane in Addis Ababa until 1968, after which he attended the liceo scientifico in Asmara, boarding at the Collegio La Salle of the Fratelli Cristiani. Finishing his schooling in 1972, he began a degree in medicine at Pisa University. After his military service in Italy, he worked in the marble industry in Tuscany. For family reasons, he returned to Addis Ababa in 1996 to work with his father. In the interview he speaks about the connections between Asmara and Addis Ababa; about the multi-lingual and multi-cultural working environment in Ethiopia; about the cultural traditions of work and about the intersection of the world of work with the world of personal relations. Drawing on his experiences of living and working in Italy and Ethiopia, he talks about what it means to be Italo-Ethiopian and of how feelings of belonging are dependent on space, experience and upbringing. He discusses what he regards as the most tangible expressions of belonging to Ethiopian culture and how one can define Italian identity and the different perspectives in which it can be seen. He reflects on the rhythms of the Italian community in Addis Ababa and the changes that he has witnessed over time.
